I was very happy to receive a copy of Eighty Days Yellow by Vina Jones to review. The cover is classy and modern in that Fifty Shades of Grey feel and the blurb was intriguing. Here it is, see what you think:
Unable to deny the chemistry between them, Dominik and Summer embark on an intense affair full of daring twists and turns, as unpredictable as it is thrilling. For Summer it is a chance to finally embrace her long-denied dark side, but she’ll soon learn that where there’s pleasure must come pain. And can a relationship born of such all-consuming passion, ever really survive?
Exhilarating, seductive and tantalisingly bold, EIGHTY DAYS is a love story that will leave you breathless for more.
So I set out to read and I was really taken with the first chapter. It was intriguing, set up the main character beautifully and hooked me into the story. I then got a teensy bit confused as the character perspective changed without me realizing and it took me a moment to work out the next chapter was from Dominic’s point of view. Please note the whole book doesn’t follow that pattern and I found that a little perplexing, especially as I’m told firmly not to do it myself by my lovely editors! (See, ladies, I am listening!)
I found the storyline fascinating but I need more love and romance to really get me going. Many of the sex scenes, though well written and imaginative, are a bit cold and clinical in my view and I couldn’t get into them. I was a little disappointed with the culmination of all the sexy build up between Dominic and Summer, it wasn’t as passionate as I had hoped.
I suspect myself of a little favouritism, Vina is two authors and I think I like one over the other. I did enjoy my read, there is no doubting both authors are highly talented and the story has lots of twists and turns and leaves you wondering what happens next, which is good as it is book one of a trilogy!
If you are not easily shocked you will probably love this novel as it is all abut pushing boundaries but if you like a little love with your hardcore sex I suspect, like me,you’ll struggle a bit to find a connection with the events on the page.
All in all I think this book just isn’t my cup of tea. It is well written (though the end seemed a bit rushed) and is full of unconventional, boundary pushing sex scenes. The Characters are well formed and the plotline is strong. It just isn’t very romantic and I need a little love with my BDSM!
