Inked

I’m thrilled to be part of the first Sexy Little Pages Anthology release. I had a lot of fun putting my story together, the research was a pure delight. Check out my Pinterest Tattoo Inspiration board to see why I enjoyed it so much! There is something particularly intriguing about beautiful body art. I’ve not got any tattoos myself and I’m not sure I’m going to get one any time soon but I do find them attractive and always like to hear the stories behind people’s ink.

Heather, from my story in the anthology, doesn’t like Tattoos especially when they’re adorning the body of a young man who seems to have no idea what appropriate behaviour around a stranger actually is.Strangely though she finds him fascinating. Here’s a little snippet for you to enjoy:

“I can tell you’re a local. You’re not engaging with the crazy guy.” He winks and heat explodes in my cheeks.

“No—I—Not—Well—”

“Don’t sweat it, I’m used to it.” He shrugs.

“Sorry, I’m in an awful mood. My favourite pink umbrella broke on me this morning and now I am completely sodden and have a full day of staring at a computer screen and squelching in my shoes to look forward to.” God, this guy has got me disturbed. I just told him way more personal detail about myself than I’m comfortable with.

“Well that fucking sucks but hey, the universe has brought you the gift of me to make up for it. I’m Jet by the way.”

Jet holds out his hand and I notice the intricate red rose tattoo peeking out from the edge of his leather, studded jacket and extending up to his knuckles which I find myself gripping. It might be the Brit in me. You have to complete a handshake, it’d be rude not too.

“I’m Heather.” The smile radiates across my face and I don’t know why. I don’t like piercings, I don’t like tattoos and I certainly don’t like strangers who touch and talk to me on the tube so why am I warming to this one?  I hold my hand out and he takes it firmly in his. Which is hot, his grip hard but giving.

“What a beautiful name. Mind you, I might be biased. I was brought up in the Yorkshire moors so I know how glorious heather can be when in full bloom.”

I feel like I’m blooming, my cheeks are certainly pink from his compliment and his touch. Why hasn’t he let go of my hand yet?

“Erm, thanks, Jet.”

He smiles, turns my hand in his and lays a kiss on the back of it, I can feel the sharp coldness of his piercings and the warmth of his lips and I can’t think, don’t remember how to breathe and seem to be lost in the depth of his warm green eyes.

“Charmed.” His smile is leisurely yet intense and seems to warm me from ear to ear and then down to my toes.

Jet lets go of my hand with a jolt.

“Oh, I love your earrings.” He leans in and squints at my earlobe. “Yeah, yeah, thought so. They’re barn owls aren’t they?”

“Yeah,” I nod, “pink ones. It’s my favourite colour and I love owls.”

“Me too, my favourite tattoo is of a Barn owl, wanna see it?”

“Sure,” I squeak, not sure if I really do, but carried away by his enthusiasm.

“I got it done a few years ago,” he grabs at the neck of the black and white skull decorated t-shirt beneath his jacket and pulls the neck down lower with both hands, stretching it to reveal a good chunk of his chest which is emblazoned with a realistic barn owl with wings spread, eyes focused on me.

“It’s stunning,” I murmur, looking left and right at the other commuters gawping at us. I’d like to study it closer, stroke it, find out what other bits of him are covered in ink.  I think I’m attracted to the crazy tattooed man. How the hell did that happen?

The tube pulls to a stop and I look at the sign, it’s Moorgate, the end of my journey is in sight.

“Jet, I have to go, well, the next stop is mine.” I genuinely wish I didn’t have to go to work, thought about calling in sick and just riding the rails with the lunatic I only met five minutes ago. I must be insane.

“Really? Well that’s a fucking shame.” He sighs.

That’s another thing I hate, casual swearing. Mum would say it was the sign of a weak mind. I can’t even think swear words without imagining my mum looking down her nose at me from Heaven. I’m a grown woman but I can’t break free of the rules she set for me even now.

I break from my thoughts to see Jet patting around his pockets, on his coat then his torn jeans.

“Ah, knew I had it.” He pulls out a pencil, looks like eyeliner actually. Is Jet wearing makeup? Before I can examine him further he’s grabbing my hand and rolling up my sleeve. “I’ll write it up here on your wrist so it doesn’t wear off.” He grins.

“I’ve got paper,” I gasp, as he turns my hand and presses the pencil tip to my skin.

“No time, beautiful.” He scrawls his numbers and pulls down my sleeve again.

“Call me, yeah?”

I nod, stand and walk away from him on very unsteady legs. Stepping onto the platform I look back at the tube window and there he is, twisted in his seat and looking right at me. Casually he waves and I find myself waving back until the train whirs back into life and disappears down the tunnel.
