Story extract

We carried on into the afternoon, climbing higher into the lush vegetation of the mountains, the bright sunlight beating down on us. Suddenly, the horses became agitated, and reared for no obvious reason. Then the mist descended.

Captain Dugarry looked across at me. We knew what we were each thinking; reminded of the eerie fog that enveloped Le Saphir and the way it was connected with the slaves’ possession. The same fear spread over me, this time the sense of dread was even stronger. The two crew members refused to go any further, so the captain sent them back to Port-au-Prince. We calmed the horses and continued on the path. This must have been what Monsieur Richelieu meant about Maman Brigitte finding us. We pressed on into the dense mist.

In the distance we could see a hazy light, and we approached cautiously. The canopy of trees opened into what we first thought was a clearing, but as our eyes adjusted to the glow of candle-lit lanterns hanging from the trees, we realised we had stumbled into a cemetery. Beneath us were roughly dug mounds, topped by crudely cut wooden crosses with skulls perched on them. I trembled with foreboding; Captain Dugarry, despite all his scepticism and bravado, was also affected. We dismounted, tied the horses up and proceeded on foot.

We silently wove our way between the graves. Perhaps mad old Pierre was right; maybe we were passing through into the spirit world. At the far end of the cemetery we could see a ramshackle mud hut with dim light glowing in its window. Had Maman Brigitte drawn us into her domain? We jumped in fright as a red crested black cockerel swooped down and settled on top of a skull, eyeing us warily.

What was I doing here? Give me a cutlass and a pistol and an open fight with an English redcoat rather than this scary place.

We approached the hut with trepidation. Captain Dugarry entered first, gently pushing the door open with a trembling hand. I took a deep breath, and followed. The first thing that struck me was the smell; sweet and pungent with an intoxicating aroma. The air was thick with powerful incense, making my head spin.

The room was a chaotic hovel; I could make out rows of shelves with ceramic pots and glass vials, a floor scattered randomly with old animal bones and teeth. Finally, my eyes fixed on Maman Brigitte sitting imperiously in an ornate chair, the ends of its arms carved into the shapes of skulls, and its sides etched with elaborate symbols. A black raven sat in her lap.

Maman Brigitte was a wild and unkempt figure, but at the same time exuding power and danger. For some reason I was expecting an old crone, but she was a young and attractive woman. Her long curly red hair, combined with her dark skin, gave a striking presence. Balanced precariously on her head was a top hat decorated extravagantly with exotic feathers. She wore a fine dark crimson ball gown, which now looked worn and dishevelled. It was as if she was dressed for a ball, but the wild way she bore herself suggested she was mocking the finery and vanity of such rich clothes. Finally, in her hand she held a staff topped with a goat’s skull. Her eyes were closed tight, as if she were asleep or had drifted into another world. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open, and glared at us menacingly.
