Lets Talk about Sex Toys!

Let’s Talk About Sexy Toys!

Hello there,

First of all, may I say thank you to lovely Victoria for inviting me onto her blog ~ t’is very exciting for me!

My name is Renee and I’m the Senior Store Manager at Sh! Women’s Erotic Emporium, where I manage a team of fabulous women known as the Sh! Girlz (you can see them do the Harlem Shake here).

At work, I have my fingers in many hot pies; there’s the customer service side of things, regular events and erotic art exhibitions, presentations on sex toys to a wide variety of groups (from NHS to Women’s Institutes) and throwing crude teenage boys out of an over-18 environment for women. But ~ that’s not what I’m here to talk about.

I always have fun talking sexy with the Sh! Girlz and Renee is here to talk about sex with me. Well, not sex with Me but…oh, let Renee explain!

No, I want to talk about sex, and sexy toys!

As I’m writing this, we are mere days away from Sh!’s 21st birthday celebrations and that got me thinking: the last two decades have been incredibly important in changing the perception of women and women’s sexuality.

20 years ago, a woman was seen as a crazed nymphomaniac if she owned a vibrator ~ these days women are almost seen as prudish if they don’t.

Gone are the days of flesh-coloured (what is ‘flesh-coloured’ anyway?) penis-shaped toys in unsafe materials, designed to emotionally satisfy men (“if a woman masturbates it’s because she needs cock”) and physically creep-out women (“I’d rather not masturbate with that, thank you very much!”), and thank God for that!

These days, we have Lelo, JeJoue and FunFactory toys in fashionable colours (match your vibe to your handbag!) and ergonomic, streamlined shapes. Toys are rechargeable, made of safe materials and offer hours of pleasure – a win for womanhood, I’d say!

I regularly see women reading erotica openly on the tube (Thank you, EL James!) and our popular Blow His Mind classes sell out weeks in advance. Women are taking control of their sexuality and I, for one, love it!

Sh!’s part in this positive change is not to be overlooked; without founders Kathryn Hoyle and Sophie Walters, I doubt much of this would have been possible. Heading up the UK’s first female-focused sex shop in an industry dominated by men high on testosterone and amyl nitrite (well, it was the 90’s) surely took both guts and balls ~ albeit pink sparkly ones with 10 speeds and a waterproof case!

I, like the other Sh! Girlz, spend most of my working day discussing G-spots, P-spots and any other spots you may have found in your nether regions. A large part of what we do is permission-giving (“yes, you should totally own a cool sex toy!”) and empowering women just like we ourselves at some point have been empowered by women comfortable in their own sexuality. We love seeing women strut out of the shop like the Sex Goddesses they truly are, swinging their pink bags with pride!

Stepping into a sex shop for the very first time can be incredibly daunting, and it’s not unusual for customers to feel overwhelmed by the vast numbers of vibrators on offer. Buying a vibrator is great fun, and sexy foreplay in itself. Think about what you’d like your toy to do for you; do you want a multi-speed vibe, or perhaps a waterproof one? Do you need a quiet one (kids and parents hear *everything*) or a small, discreet one that travels easily? (It’s totally cool if you’re not sure how to answer the above questions ~ we can still help point you in the right direction).

Before I sign off, I’d also like to tell you about Filthy Fridays: we have an impressive collection of free erotica on the Sh! Blog, and each Friday we post a new instalment from one of the awesome female authoresses we know (like Victoria). Feel free to hop on over and enjoy some seriously hot reading ~ and whilst you are there, you may want to take advantage of some of the amazing birthday offers we have running this month; you may well find something that suits your particular brand of sexy..!
